Clarke's Rants: Spurs (a)

A Frank Lampard brace saw us take the points at Three Point Lane. Inevitably, the first question thrown Clarke’s way was about the validity of our penalty. The answer was emphatic: “I thought we should have had the one before that on Arjen Robben,” he said. “That was a pen and the one in the second half, also on Robben — so, one out of three.

“The mood in the dressing room was great. The boys are pleased with themselves. They knew it was a big result.

“We knew before we came it would be difficult. They’re playing well, full of confidence. It was just about approaching the game with the right manner. Away games are always difficult. You don’t know what your going to get but you know it’ll be hard.

“I don’t think there are any easy games in the Premier League. The celebrations at the end showed how much it meant to the team, the club.”

Frank Lampard came in for some glowing praise by Clarke for his match winning contribution. “His energy levels are fantastic,” he marvelled. “Today was a difficult match for the midfield, Tottenham competed very well. But Frank showed his qualities on the penalty. There was a lot of pressure, and it was a great penalty. And then when Eidur got away at the end he showed great energy to get up and on the end of his pass.”

Next in line for special praise – our incredible defence. “I think you’ve got to mention Petr Cech,” he suggested. “The two centre-backs, John Terry and William Gallas, who’ve played together a lot this season and haven’t conceded any goals. But over all it’s the work ethic working to stop chances all over the pitch.

“If we keep getting three points there’s not much the other teams can do except win and try to keep up. We go into every game to win the three points. We’re not invincible but we’re on top of our game and the matches can’t come quick enough.”

Hear, hear!
