With Scumchester also losing at lowly Blackburn, we need one point to guarentee a 2nd place finish, in the game at Old Trafford next Saturday morning.

We needs goals against Monaco. We need a clean sheet too. Against Soton we got both.

We are four points clear of Manchester which is very important,” declared a happy Tinkerman.

“Now everything is in our hands. If we lose at Manchester and we win against Leeds, we get the second place, so today has been a great result for everybody.”

“In the last five matches, we didn’t lose the focus. The performances were good. We were just a little unlucky because we had a lot of chances to score a goal, hit the post and bar and everything else and now today we score with an own goal.

“The team spirit was unbelievable. After Monaco we showed fantastic spirit against Newcastle and today the same. We weren’t nervous. We moved the ball with the right distance. We put Southampton into their half and they tried to close all the space.

“It was important to score because after that Southampton had to open up and that gave us more space. Look how strange football is: we tried to do everything right, we made a mistake to give them the chance to score and then we scored an own goal. That’s football. It’s crazy but it’s fantastic!

“It was a good performance – four goals, all players in good condition”, he enthused.
