Chelsea full-back Jess Carter has signed a new one-year contract with an option to extend to 2023, and has her eyes fixed firmly on securing a regular starting role for the WSL champions.
23-year-old Carter joined Chelsea from Birmingham in 2018 and began to enjoy some consistent chances as a right-back towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
Carter is already the fifth Chelsea player to sign a contract extension in 2021 after Fran Kirby, Sophie Ingle, Maren Mjelde and goalkeeper Carly Telford. Netherlands international defender Aniek Nouwen has also already signed for the club ahead of next season.
But, despite starting in the Champions League final against Barcelona, Carter by her own admission has never been one of the first names on Emma Hayes’ teamsheet. Her ambition now that she has been rewarded with a new contract is to change that.
“After that I want to get back into the England set up and try to become an international consistent player but I’ve got to focus on my club football first because without performing at the club I won’t be able to get in at England, so they are my two goals for next season.”
Carter called it a ‘crazy’ three years since she arrived at Chelsea but now says she is settled enough to better understand the expectations attached to being at the club.
“There have been the highest of highs and the lowest of lows for me personally, but I know that I’ve grown so much here at this club, both on and off the pitch,” she explained.

“I’ve hit a point now where I know what is expected of me, I know what I need to bring to the table, and I feel like I’m in a position now where I’m finally starting to compete with some of the girls. There is more that I can do here at Chelsea to help the team.”
