Player Ratings: Newcastle (h)

Last updated : 05 December 2004 By Liam Corbett
Petr Cech - Made two quality saves from Robert's free kicks. About all he had to do apart from one smart block from Bellamy. 8

Paulo Ferreira - Didn't go forward much at all and was solid and composed at the back. Robert didnt get a sniff in open play really! 7

John Terry - Could copy his rating every week. He did win everything in the air, blocked shots, made tackles, etc. How Rio walks back into the England team is beyond me. 9

Ricardo Carvalho - Rode his luck a bit after early booking but was in good form all day. Looks very comfortable now next to Terry and with the physical side of the Premiership. 7

William Gallas - Started again at left back but was replaced by Wayne Bridge. With the space being left down the left hand side, a left footed player could deliver crosses whereas the right footed Gallas couldn't. Solid enough showing at left back yet again, nothing spectacular. 7

Claude Makelele - Very composed on the ball at kept the team ticking over. Really starting to be appreicated by the fans for his work and rightly so. Real Madrid have never been the same since! 8

Frank Lampard - Poor first half, but nice finish and quality ball for Drogba. Voted man of the match and really picked up his game in second half as Newcastle tired. 8

Tiago - Didn't really show up, a few sloppy passes but nothing major! Replaced later on as we switched to 2 strikers. 6

Arjen Robben - Great showing, for his goal and for overall running at Newcastle. Lauren will be losing sleep this week! Brilliant finish for his goal and unselfish on many occasions. 8

Damien Duff - Like Robben was selfish when he needed to be but always played the right ball. Took on up to three or four players at once! Constant rotation with Robben and Gudjohnsen/ Drogba was a nightmare for Newcastle's defenders. 8

Eidur Gudjohnsen - Poor game from the Iceman. Missed a one on one and looked off the pace. Replaced by Drogba. 6

SUBS:

Didier Drogba - Quality. Showed glimpses of why we paid so much for him. Strong in the air, linked well with Duff and Robben and got his goal. 9

Mateja Kezman - Chipped in, literally, with a goal at last!! Took a lot of bottle to take the penalty, even more so to then dink it straight down the middle!! Unlucky before that to hit post. 8

Wayne Bridge - Offered more going forward than Gallas and looked comfortable back again at left back. 7
