Petr Cech - Handled very well when called upon, which was rare. One dodgy moment from an awkward first half cross but looked sound. 7

Paulo Ferreira - Couple of mistakes but we'll give him benefit of doubt. First game in English football, playing Manchester United and facing Ryan Giggs! Impressive debut. 7

John Terry - Named official man of the match. Solid display and showed why he and William Gallas have such an impressive record as a pair. Solid as a rock in his first game as club captain. 8

William Gallas - Again, his partnership with Terry is second to none, and his ability to play at full back should mean he won't be one Mourinho drops too often. Handled Smith very well. 8

Wayne Bridge - Did very well, considering Mourinho's formation demands so much of full backs. Nothing spectacular but steady. 7

Geremi - Not one of his better days. Didn't influence play at all and was ineffective. 6

Frank Lampard - Like Geremi, wasn't on top form but reliable and stable. Unlucky with a first half free kick that went just wide. Was forced to hold back more and had less license to roam in this new formation, possibly accounting for him being quiet. 7

Claude Makelele - Held the midfield superbly. Sat just in front of the back four and just behind the attckers. Never tempted to go forward and won quite a few tackles. Passing was a bit off though. 8

Alexei Smertin - The most impressive of the debutants. I was as surprised as anybody when he was selected to start, but he soon proved why Mourinho was so keen for him to return. Got up and down and worked very hard, and not afraid to put his foot in. 8

Eidur Gudjohnsen - Linked very well with Drogba for the goal and the overall partnership showed promising signs. Took the goal superbly, not afraid to risk getting hurt not just once with Howard but then to go in as Roy Keane's tried to scissor kick him in the head! Deserved his goal. Tracked back extremely well, something Mourinho has obviously installed in his strikers as Drogba was the same, pressurising the defence and filling in for team mates when they were stranded. 8

Didier Drogba - Showed great potential and looks to be an exciting signing. Very powerful. I think Alan Smith is still shaking from his free kick which slapped him straight on his back! Tracked back well, showed a good understanding with Gudjohnsen and a great assist for the goal. 7
