Chelsea 1 Atletico Madrid 3

Chelsea won't now contest the dream Champions League final as they were humiliated by Atletico Madrid 3-1 at Stamford Bridge tonight In the second leg semi-final.

Instead it will be an all-Madrid final in Lisbon on May 24 with Spanish league leaders Atletico facing their fierce rivals Real

Needing only a win at Stamford Bridge tonight, following their 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid last week, the Blues even had the temerity to take the lead when Fernando Torres sweetly struck goal on 36 minutes seemed to offer hope that the Blues would contest the final of Europe's top club competition.

But sloppy defending on the stroke of half-time saw Adrian Lopez equalise. Star striker Diego Costa rammed home a penalty after 60 minutes, again after a sloppy challenge from substitute Samuel Eto'o, before Arda Turan added the final humiliating goal 18 minutes from time.
Make no mistake, the best team won. People will question Jose Mourinho's team selection, especially bringing in Ashley Cole to left back and moving Cesar Azpilucueta to a left-sided midfield slot.

But Atletico Madrid did a number on the Blues and their fierce counter-attacking moves and never say die defensive spirit overwhelmed Chelsea to the point of submission.
It was Madrid who were the happy to see five added minutes at the end as all. The Chelsea players wanted to do was to allow the pitch to swallow them up whole.

In a game as cagy as this one, with both sides set up for counter-attacking play, the option of a free-kick in and around the opposition penalty area, was simply too good to mess up.

So when Ramires won a kick after 10 minutes, it was set up for his fellow Brazilian Willian to step up to the plate - sadly for him, his 25-yarder was high and wide of Thibaut Courtois's crossbar.
Atletico Madrid took a foray into enemy territory 10 minutes later and were deep into Chelsea's siz-yard box, before Gary Cahill made a last-ditch tackle to thwart Diego Costa.

A period of sustained pressure by the home side saw David Luiz, in a holding midfield position, find himself surprisingly in the Spanish penalty area, and a clever overhead kick inched just wide of Courtois's right post.

This was followed by two corners which came to nothing as Madrid dealt comfortably with the efforts.

Cahill was the first player to enter Nicola Rizzoli's yellow book on the half-hour for a needlessly late challenge on Costa, but the striker found the Italian referee in a more lenient mood two minutes later when he downed John Terry.

However a deserved breakthrough came 10 minutes from half-time. Willian did brilliant
On the right byline, cutting through two Madrid players, the ball was arrowed into the six-yard box by the following in Cesar Azpilicueta and up popped Fernando Torres, an ex Atletico Madrid player to drive a low right-foot past Courtois, to put the Blues ahead on aggregate.

Torres failed to celebrate in a joyous manner, befitting such a crucial goal, but out of respect for his old club, he simply put up his hands and took in the adulation from the crowd and the hugs from his team mates.

With only a goal needed by the visitors to win the tie if it ended 1-1, Chelsea had to be alert when a free-kick was headed goal-bound by Adrian Lopez with three minutes on the clock.

Thankfully for the Blues, 41-year-old Mark Schwarzer, in for the injured peter Cech, was equal to the task.

But a minute later and disaster struck for the home side as composed set up play by Tiago saw his cross to the far post flicked on by Juanfran. The ball eluded three Chelsea players, leaving Lopez the simplest of tasks to slot home past Schwarzer from six yards.

That shock to the system had a galvanising affect of the Chelsea fans, who roared their team out of the tunnel for the start of then second half.

Unfortunately the players failed to respond and Schwarzer had to make a sizzling save two minutes after the restart.

The clearly rattled Chelsea even allowed Ex-Blue Tiago the luxury of a left-footed daisy-cutter from 25 yards. Schwarzer, while, smothering the weak effort still looked shakily.

Cahill almost scored from a powerful header off a Willian free-kick, but Courtois brilliantly parried the ball away. A minute later, on 54 minutes and Jose Mourinho decided to reshuffle his pack. Taking off left back Ashley Cole and bringing on striker Samuel Eto'o. Azpilicutea reverted to the full back berth with Torres and Eto'o up front.

Azpilicutea was soon in action heading clear a deep cross as the Blues lost control of possession and the match.

Often Mourinho's substitutions work, but this one was disastrous.

Eto'o's first touch of the ball was to hack down Diego Costa in the penalty area, this giving the striker the simplest of chances from the spot kick to put them 2-1 up on 61 minutes.
A touch of time-wasting before the kick saw Costa get a yellow card.

Needing two goals, the Blues piled forward and David Luiz was desperately unlucky to see his header from a Willian left-sided free-kick rattle the Madrid crossbar. This was quickly followed up by. Ramires long range effort that Courtois easily held.

Madrid boss Diego Simeone replaced yellow-carded Juanfran with Raul Garcia, while Mourinho then threw on Demba Ba, taking off Torres.

Again the Mourinho substitution failed to work, for without the ball, Ba and Eto'o could do nothing.
Madrid increased their lead on 72 minutes with a goal of sublime quality. Zipping the ball around the pitch, Chelsea were chasing shadows, and straight after the home side's crossbar was rattled, from the same move, Arda Turan struck a dagger in the heart of Chelsea by arrowing on a fierce effort that gave Schwarzer no chance.

Andre Schurrle was introduced by Mourinho for the ineffective Willian with 15 minutes of the match to go.

Costa's night ended at the same time, Jose Sousa replacing the man, many expect to be a Chelsea player next season.

Simeone's final substitution saw Christian Rodrigiez for Turan.

It was all over by then, many supporters leaving early to try and find a Tube station to take them and their tails, firmly swinging between their legs home.
