Liverpool ensured that they finished top of Champions League Group G as the reigning European champions held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho brought in Paolo Ferreira for Asier del Horno, while Reds boss Rafa Benitez restored Djimi Traore, Dietmar Hamann, Mohamed Sissoko and John Arne Riise to his starting eleven.

The opening minutes saw little in the way of goalmouth action, with both sides content to probe and look for an opening.

Seven minutes in Jose Reina had to get down quickly to turn aside a powerful 20-yard drive by Frank Lampard.

At the other end Steven Gerrard tried his luck from 25 yards, but dragged his right-foot shot well wide of the far post.

Luis Garcia was crowded out by a combination of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho with 15 minutes played, as the Reds made a bright start.

After a quiet few minutes, Norwegian powerhouse Riise forced Petr Cech to make a smart low save from his strong left-footer from the edge of the area, following Gerrard's astute pass.

Four minutes before the interval Eidur Gudjohnsen almost played in Lampard, but Reina was quickly out to gather and the Spanish keeper easily dealt with a Lampard shot soon after.

At half-time the Blues brought on del Horno for Ferreira, but the Reds almost snatched a lead as Peter Crouch came close to getting clear, only for Cech to smother the danger.

Arjen Robben then flashed a shot into the sidenetting after good set-up play by Didier Drogba.

Chelsea had started to boss proceedings, having upped the pace since the restart, but the visitors refused to buckle as they sought a ninth consecutive clean sheet.

Benitez made changes in bringing on Harry Kewell and Fernando Morientes, before his Blues counterpart Mourinho responded with the introduction of both Carlton Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

The substitutions did little for the flow of the game, while Liverpool's effective offside trap also helped to condense play in midfield.

Six minutes from time a half-cleared corner almost allowed William Gallas to break the deadlock, but as he blazed his shot over the offside flag was up yet again.

That proved to be the last sniff of a chance as a disappointing encounter ended without either keeper being seriously extended.
