Player Ratings: Porto (h)

Last updated : 30 September 2004 By Rich Godden
Petr Cech- Solid display, up until a slight blunder that allowed Porto to score. Does everything by the book, but was caught by surprise by a long shot which took a slight defelection off Tex. 7

Paulo Ferreira- One of his better games against his former club. With Gallas playing left back, Paulo could get forward a lot more and he did to great effect. Sent in some dangerous crosses and, with more performances like this, he will prove his doubters wrong! 8

John Terry- What more can you say about Tex? Immense in defence as ever, and a fantastic goal to top off his night! Too consistent to be true! 9

Ricardo Carvalho- Another impressive showing by Rico, although at times his communication with Tex was a bit lax. Whilst Tex and Gallas would be holding a high defensive line, Rico and Ferreira were dropping off a touch, giving us an uneven balance. But a small gripe about an otherwise flawless performance. 8

William Gallas- Doesn't look at home at left back, constantly out of position and nowhere near as effective as he is at centre back. Still, considering Bridgey and Baba were both out, I wouldn't want anyone else playing there! 7

Claude Makelele- Fantastic again. Gave away the ball cheaply a few times, but other than that he was at his best. The Champions League really is his stage to shine... and he does! 8

Frank Lampard- Solid as ever, whilst not ever being spectacular. Linked up well with his fellow midfielders but, under Mourinho he just isn't having the same effect. Should improve as the season goes on. 7

Alexey Smertin- Note the new spelling for his first name! And what a way to mark it, with a fantastic opener! So tenacious in his tackling, he reminds me of Robbie Savage, the way he plays the game to the brink. Always looks worth a booking though! 8

Damien Duff- Great ball in for Drogba to breka his Stamford Bridge duck, but otherwise pretty quiet. Still looks dangerous when he gets the ball and may just have been feeling the effects of starting his second game in four days. 7

Didier Drogba- Didi do well? Didn't he just! Great goal, should have had two but for a dodgy ref! His general play was also pretty useful and he is slowly but surely finding his feet in England. The only way is up! 8

Eidur Gudjohnsen- Poor, again. Wants too long on the ball and isn't spotting the easy passes. If he doesn't improve soon, he'll be out of the side in no time. But whilst we are winning, it gives Eidur a bit of breathing space. 6
