Player Ratings: Aston Villa (a)

Last updated : 12 September 2004 By Rich Godden
Petr Cech- Fourth clean sheet in five league appearances for the giant Czech goalkeeper. Came under more pressure than in previous games this season, but always looked comfortable. 7

Paulo Ferreira- Defensively, it is hard to find fault with him. However, his failure to join up with the attack is extremely frustrating, especially as we play a system that does not use wingers. 6

John Terry- JT is like a broken record, such is his consistency. The lad just doesn't have bad games and he was as commanding as ever at Villa Park. 8

Ricardo Carvalho- Has taken to the Premiership like a duck to water. Didn't put a foot wrong against Villa, and played the ball out of defence with such composure. 8

Celestine Babayaro- Decent showing by Baba, who is proving to be a more than able replacement for fellow left back Wayne Bridge. Looked a bit flustered at times when up against Gareth Barry, but held his own. Also managed to offer a great attacking option in the second half. 7

Claude Makelele- Great start to the season by Claude. Did his job to perfection against Villa, as he has done in every game so far this season. Alongside JT, Claude was our best player yesterday, as he has been so far this season. 8

Frank Lampard- Ran his socks off but, ultimately, Frank will be judged on his end product. And, unfortunately, it didn't quite work out for him! Still, his box to box play was as good as ever, and once he gets his shooting boots on he will once again be a force to be reckoned with! 7

Tiago- Like Lamps, Tiago's play was lacking an end product, despite his workmanlike efforts. But he looks settled in the Premiership already and isn't afraid to put his foot in. 7

Joe Cole- Was never totally in the game, but kept flitting in and out of it. The occasional nice flick and good run but as ever with Joe, no end product. His excuse for not doing the business has been due to never being given a proper run in the side. Well, now you've been given the chance Joe, it's time to repay the faith! 6

Mateja Kezman- Looked like a fantastic player in pre season but hasn't really done an awful lot in his short Premiership career. Runs around a lot, sometimes even with the ball (!), but doesn't seem to be getting himself in the right places. Will need to improve to keep his place in the side ahead of Eidur and Adrian. 6

Didier Drogba- Very hit and miss. At times, he looked like the new Thierry Henry, with some great, direct running. Then he would do things that even Diego Forlan couldn't manage. On one occasion, a fantastic through ball was destined to put him in on goal... somehow, Didier managed to allow the ball to hit him in the back of the head! On this evidence, he is not a £24 million striker, but we must give him time... after all, Rome wasn't built in a day! 6
