Player Ratings: Aston Villa (a)

Last updated : 12 April 2004 By Rich Godden
Marco Ambrosio- No chance for any of the Villa goals. Made one fine save from a Vassell effort. The only other thing worth noting was his poor kicking. 7

Mario Melchiot- Don't know what was going through his mind when he recklessly clattered into the back of Barry to concede the penalty. Then was far too casual for Villa's second, allowing Hitzlesperger time to pull the trigger, and Villa's third also came down his flank. A game to forget for Mario, and he was taken off before the hour mark. 4

Robert Huth- Defended sloppily at times, but tackled with real passion and gave it his all. Many say he is wise beyond his years, but it is clear for all to see that Huthy needs more time to develop. 6

John Terry- Like most of his team mates, not at his best. But JT still looked our best defender, without doubt. Like Huth, tackled with passion and was only ever caught out by Vassell's pace. 7

Wayne Bridge- Poor... probably still basking in the glory of his goal against Arsenal! Although it should be noted his cross was vital for our first. 6

Geremi- £7 million worth of talent.... apparently! Another average display from Geremi, apart from the odd dangerous cross. One player who must buck up his ideas or else he will find himself surplus to requirements. 6

Scott Parker- Did his job pretty well today, although he is certainly no Makelele. His passing was neat and he also managed to get forward whenever possible. 7

Frank Lampard- An Easter weekend to forget for Mr Lampard. Ran his heart out as ever, but was just lacking quality today. He might argue that, physically, he doesn't need a rest- but how about mentally?? 6

Damien Duff- Have you ever seen Duff play so poorly. Couldn't beat his man at all, barely saw the ball and was deservedly replaced with 20 minutes to play. 5

Adrian Mutu- Started off brightly, and unlucky to see his early header hit the post, even though Crespo but the rebound away. But other than that, Mutu looked off the pace and he was just as ineffective as Duffer. 5

Hernan Crespo- How do you judge a striker's performance? If it is on goals, then Crespo gets a 9 out of 10. His first, a typical poachers goal. His second, although right at the death, was a finish of the highest quality. And his all round play was actually pretty decent, as he held the ball up pretty well and also created chances for others. 8

Subs

William Gallas- Came on for Melchiot and immediately the side looked better defensively! And he also got forward extremely well, linking up nicely with Geremi. 7

Joe Cole- Replaced Mutu but, in all fairness, didn't make much of an impact. But at least he wanted the ball and he wanted to try things. 10 out of 10 for effort but overall he gets a 7

Jesper Gronkjaer- Did more in 20 minutes than Duff did in 70! Looked a threat against De La Cruz and went very close with one effort. Still too many misplaced crosses for my liking. 7
