Improvement There For All To See

Yes, many will argue that we were expected to win at Southampton yesterday. On paper, we are expected to beat almost anybody! But the fact of the matter is that football is played on grass not paper.

And yesterday's win at Southamtpon was the fifth time already this season that we have improved on a result from last season. I'm not talking about the scoreline, I'm talking purely about results.

This season, we opened the campaign away at Liverpool. A game that we had lost last season by a solitary last minute goal by Michael Owen. This year, we won 2-1, with JFH scoring our very own late winner. Which meant that we got three points more than last season from Anfield.

A few games later, we took on Blackburn at the Bridge. A game that we lost 2-1 last season. This year, we recorded a 2-2 draw, meaning a gain of one point on last season.

Next up was Spurs at Stamford Bridge. Thanks to a magnificent Zola free kick, it was a game that we had drawn 1-1 last season. This time around, we won 4-2, thanks to our new hero... Mutu! Two points gained on last season. Already that is six points gained on last season.

In early October, we took the trip to Teeside to take on Boro. Last season, Geremi's wonderful free kick for Boro helped them to a 1-1 draw with us. This time around, Hernan Crespo's last minute goal ensured we gained two points more than last season's fixture.

And yesterday at Southampton, we improved on our 1-1 draw of last season, with a 1-0 victory. Another two points gained. That's ten points better off from the same fixtures last season. And we've only done worse in one fixture so far this season, as opposed to last season.

That was away at Brimingham. Last season, we won 3-1. This season, we drew 0-0. So two points dropped.

That still leaves us with eight points gained! Which is monumental, when you consider how the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle (our closest rivals last season) have done this year.

So the next time you hear Claudio Ranieri claim that we are not ready for the title, just remember our improvements so far this season- and think of how much better we are going to get as the season goes on...
