End Of Season Report: Goalkeepers

Last updated : 16 May 2004 By Rich Godden
Carlo Cudicini- By no means at his best but, on his day, still the best keeper in the league. Made a real howler against Arsenal back in October, to follow up on his nightmare showing against Besiktas. Also blundered against Man Yoo in the penultimate game of the season, but he had been exceptional prior to that. Despite injury restricting his perfromances from the new year onwards, he was immense for most of the season. Memorable performances against Lazio, home and away, and Liverpool on the opening day of the season. But he saved his best for our February trip to Man City, where he made a series of amazing saves. So, in conclusion, he was dependable 95% of the time when he was on the pitch... but we just need him out on the pitch more than he was this season! B+

Marco Ambrosio- Made his debut against Notts County in the Carling Cup and was absolutely shocking. So when Carlo broke his hand in early March, you can imagine how Chelsea fans felt when Marco Ambrosio was given the goalkeepers jersey. But he did not let anyone down, putting in a blinding performance at Bolton! Helped us to victory over Arsenal for the first time in 17 meetings to guide us to a Champions League semi final meeting with Monaco. And Monte Carlo was the venue where Marco made his first mistake as Carlo's replacement, allowing Nonda a cheap goal to make it 3-1. Other than that, Marco was superb and Chelsea fans really took him to their hearts... B

Neil Sullivan- Made one mistake against Arsenal which saw us knocked out of the title race, never given another chance. Looked good in his other performances this season, particularly against Pompey at the Bridge and at Reading in the Carling Cup. C

Keep checking Chelsea Mad in the coming weeks as we rate the rest of the squad after a memorable season...
