Northampton Town have sacked Kevin Wilson after they slumped to their eighth league defeat of the season against Blackpool last night.

Despite the Second Division club's chairman Barry Stonhill handing Wilson his backing last week, the club have decided to relieve The Cobblers boss of his duties and said in a statement: "The Board are very concerned at the run of results, not just this season, but also at the end of last season.

"It was a very hard decision, and we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Kevin for all his hard work here in the last four years, not only as a manager, but also as assistant to Ian Atkins before that.

"We always take decisions we believe to be in the best interests of the club, however hard those decisions are, and this is not something we have taken lightly.

"We are aware that we have suffered some horrific injury problems and we are understanding of the position, but we feel now is the right time to take this action."

Wilson was aware that his future at the club was hanging by a thread after the defeat to Blackpool, and he said afterwards: "Of course you feel for your job when things are not going well."

And as the fans called for his head during the 3-1 defeat, Wilson admitted that the pressure was starting to affect him.

"It hurts me when people are having a go," added Wilson.

"That's my character.

I hope it hurts a few other people as well because it hurts me."
