Villas-Boas - an admirable move by Gourlay

Now you have to admire Ron Gourlay.

I'm sure that's not a sentence most Chelsea-Mad folk hear often - but by persuading Roman Abramovich to part with the thick end of £14m just sign fresh-faced whippersnapper Andre Villas-Boas from Porto, Ron has put his reputation and quite possibly his Chelsea career on the line.

Now Villas-Boas is no top striker - he's no Lional Mezzi or Ronaldo - heck, he's not even a Winston Bogarde - he's a 33-year-old rookie manager who has had a terrific couple of seasons.

He's won, with Porto, the Europa Cup, league title and league cup - impressive stuff indeed. But now, he's moving into the truly big league - the Premier League and Champions League.

When he signs on the dotted line this week - it will be to a £4.5m a year deal for four years.

One can only hope he will bring in his own staff - and ensure unqualified people are removed from the technical area - the dugout to the likes of you and me.

Let's hope he has enough nous to have secured in his contract the terms and conditions that will allow him the freedom to do what he wants.

If he succeeds, then he rightly gets all the plaudits - if he fails - it will be down to him and him alone.

Too often, the likes of Scolari and Ancelotti could hide behind the excuse they were not in full control whenever the side dipped below expected performances.

Too often the hand of Abramovich was trotted out as the undermining influence - 'he's picking the team - by fax - he's buying players the coach does not want or need' - we have all heard these stories.

Villa-Boas will get the chance to outline his philosophy, his vision for Chelsea when he holds his first press conference.

Let's hope he does not disappoint the many disillusioned Chelsea fans who have been less than happy with how Chelsea's top brass has conducted their business in recent months.

Like I said in the intro, Ron Gourlay has to be admired for his selection of Andre - it's a bold move, a gamble.

This must be the first and probably the only time, that an article about Villas-Boas does not contain the words 'Mourinho' and 'protege' in the same sentence - 'Damn!"
