Title Winning Chelsea Was A One Season Wonder

Last updated : 07 September 2015 By DSG

There were times last season when Chelsea seemed just too good for everyone else, scoring goals, defending well and exhibiting real flair

Several pundits and analysts even went as far as to say the Blues could dominate for a number of years after last season

Jose Mourinho concurred with these assertions and seemed to promise fans many prosperous years to come seeing as his philosophy was to build a young yet strong squad.

However, ChelseaÂ’s start to this season has done very little to confirm what was thought of them last season

Some have blamed a short pre-season, others a lack of motivation but we will look at the key players from last season and if they have enough to deliver this season and beyond.

Thibaut Courtois The young Belgian did not have much to do last season but when he was required he delivered more often than not

One would think his best is yet to come and he will surely perform well this season and possibly for a considerable number of years to come

Branislav Ivanovic He was touted as the perfect wing back last season with goals, assists and defensive solidity

This season has been a far cry from his potential as he struggles to go forward and struggles even more to defend against pacey wingers

At 31 years of age, he may not have many more years at the highest level especially as a wing back

It does appear that last season was his peak and going forward a replacement should be found

John Terry Captain, Leader, Legend as of last season that is

The former England captain played every Premier League game for Chelsea en-route to the title

He went to pre-season training before everyone else but age seems to be catching up with him

Every centre forward seems to be able to get in behind him and he just cannot keep up

His end as a starter is nigh.

Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic The two were ChelseaÂ’s backbone last season

Everything started and ended with them

Thus far, they seem to be detached from the whole workings of the team

However, it is almost certain they will improve

If the Chelsea generation of dominance does occur they will surely be part of it

One would be inclined to think they certainly are not single season wonders.

Diego Costa The ever injured Spanish striker had a great first season last season, strength, tenacity and a real cutting edge

None of those have materialised this season

A dip in form or maybe or lack of supply

One thing for sure is his best is yet to come.

On paper, this Chelsea team looks like it should last for years but whoÂ’s to say the collapse has not already begun.
