Jose Mourinho is very confident his side will retain their league title.
But unlike last season, he expects the race for the Premiership to go to the wire.

“I said in pre-season that we will win the title at the last game of the season," he said
"And I still believe that - we will win the title,” he added."

Jose Mourinho was in bullish mood as expected after the victory, the first in three games.

He continued: “My half-time team talk was all about what we would do in the last 20 minutes if the score remained the same.

“We were playing okay, not winning but Newcastle were playing well.

“It was not a penalty when Lee Bowyer and John Terry clashed and if there was a handball somewhere else, then I did not see it.

Joe Cole is now a player,” said the Chelsea boss. man.

“A year ago he was a player with potential, now he is a player.

“He is defensively aware, and understands when to attack. He now plays for the team - everyone is happy with him.

“With England, Sven-Goran Erickson has problems but I will not put pressure on him in regard to Cole.”

Speaking about the allegations of a rift between him and striker Herman Crespo, Mourinho said: “ Crespo came off for Argentina against England after 70 minutes with cramp. He knows he can play for the national side and he came back on Thursday fit to play.

“I don’t have a headache about team selection, the only headache I get is when players are injured and I can’t select from all of them.

“That is why we have 23 players. - to counter these injuries.”

Speaking about the injury to Makelele after 10 minutes, Mourinho said: “He had a pain on the knee following the clash with Parker and could not play anymore. I hope it is not a serious injury, but when Maka can’t play, it is serious for the team.

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness lamented the performance of referee Mark Halsey; “It looked like a penalty to me,” said the Scotsman.

“I did not ask the ref, you don’t get any sense from them and I’m sick of paying fines.

“We had two errors for the first goals and a deflected shot for the third - there was not much between the two teams.

Asked about the unavailability of England striker Michael Owen, Souness said: “Michael felt his groin go on Friday and today felt he was not right."
