Thiago Silva Hits Out at Former Club (& Lionel Messi) as He Discusses PSG Exit

New Chelsea captain Thiago Silva has hit out at former employers Paris Saint-Germain over the treatment he received during his final months at the club, admitting he was 'annoyed' by the French champions' initial reluctance to offer him a new contract.

The 36-year-old spent eight successful years with les Parisiens, becoming their longest serving captain and winning seven Ligue 1 titles. His time with PSG almost enjoyed a fairytale ending last August, when Thomas Tuchel's side reached the Champions League final, but they succumbed to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Silva left the French capital in the summer, joining Premier League side Chelsea when his deal with the European finalists expired. The Brazil international was hurt by how his time with PSG came to an end, and speaking to France Football, he explained the manner in which sporting director Leonardo approached his contract situation 'annoyed' him, and he believes it 'should have been done differently.'

"I was not angry but it is a situation that annoyed me. The way it was done didn't please me at all. Even if it was during the confinement, things should have been done differently," he said.

"Leonardo called me to ask if I wanted to keep going for two months for the Champions League, I said yes. Then he said that the club would not go over these two months. It pissed me off because of what I did for this club during eight years. It should have been done differently.

"You don't act like this with someone who spent so much time at a club. At the start, I was angry."

Silva also took a cheeky swipe at Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and former PSG teammate Edinson Cavani, criticising the duo for the 'clumsy' manner in which they tried to force moves away from their respective clubs.

"During all my career in Paris, I gave my best. I never cheated. Leo [Messi] did it in a clumsy and rushed way. And the same with [Edinson] Cavani."

The Chelsea star also stated that Leonardo eventually offered him a one-year extension at the end of the Champions League run, but he had already agreed a move to Stamford Bridge, and so turned down the sporting director's advances.

"After the final, he [Leonardo] offered me a new one-year deal, like three Champions League games had changed everything. But it was too late. I already said yes to Chelsea. I don't have hatred or anger towards Leonardo or PSG. I am grateful and I want to thank the president Nasser Al Khelaifi for this beautiful adventure."

Life in blue got off to a difficult start for Silva, after he gifted a goal to West Bromwich Albion on his Premier League debut, and was later substituted in a dramatic 3-3 draw with the newly promoted side.
