With Joe Cole released, Chelsea are setting their sights on Spanish wing wonder David Silva.
The Valencia player , 24 would fit neatly into Chelsea’s side and is a player much-admired not only by Chelsea but by Liverpool skipper Stevie Gerrard.
I spoke to Gerrard not so long ago and asked him which player he would like to see Liverpool buy.
His instant response was “Silva”.
“Silva can play either flank,” said the England skipper. “He would provide the bullets for Torres.”
Now it appears that Silva might be providing the ammo for Drogba and Anelka next season.
A £35million pound offer is expected to be table next week with, if accepted, seeing Chelsea medical staff heading off to South Africa to perform a medical.
Manchester City were hopeful to be the only Premier league side in the running for Silva, and they will have to up their £30m offer.
But It’s believed Silva would prefer to move to a London club with Chelsea the only side capable in the capital of landing him.
The lure of being with Premier League champions could prove to be decisive and the prospect of another serious tilt at the Champions League irresistible.
Silva could still be partnered with Torres as Chelsea are waiting for Liverpool to announce their new manager before tabling a £55m for the hitman.
Chelsea need to ad serious8s world-class quality to the squad following the departure of Joe Cole, Michael Ballack, Juilano Belletti and the imminent departure of Portugal midfielder Deco.
