Premier League Underrated XI - 20122013

Last updated : 28 May 2013 By DSG
Manager: Steve Clarke ? West Brom

It was his first season in charge of Albion and had an incredible season finishing 8thwith 49 points, their highest ever. It was particularly the beginning of the season where they impressed the most and recorded an opening day 3-0 win over Liverpool. A 2-1 win over Chelsea in November was another highlight of an amazing season at the Hawthorns.

GK: Tim Howard ? Everton

Since leaving Manchester United in 2007, Howard has been almost ever present for Everton, he fell 2 games short of equalling Neville Southall's record (214) of most consecutive league games. He is only 34 so has plenty of years still left in him, is regarded as one of the best in the Premier League and is one of the very few goalkeepers who has scored a goal. This year he kept 10 clean sheets.

RB: C?sar Azpilicueta ? Chelsea

The Spaniard signed from Marseille in August 2012 for ?7m and seemed to be Chelsea's bargain buy of the season. 'Dave' to his team-mates, made 27 Premier League appearances although his first game wasn't until coming on as a substitute against Norwich in October. He forced Ivanovic out of his natural RB position and pushing him to CB. At only 23, he will continue to develop into a world class player.

CB: Ryan Shawcross ? Stoke City

He was finally recognised for his ability this season as he received his first England appearance. The Stoke City skipper is known for his hard tackles and commitment, an old-fashioned centre half you could say. He is unfortunately known for that tackle on Aaron Ramsey but that shouldn't shift opinions. He led his team out at Wembley in 2011 in a FA Cup Final and with England having no first team centre backs, he could be a surprise inclusion on the plane to Brazil.

CB: Michael Dawson ? Tottenham Hotspur

A very popular player at White Hart Lane, Dawson has established himself into Spurs' captain, he has everything has a centre half should have; good aerial ability, positional sense, leadership and so on. Alike Shawcross, he could emerge to be a contender for a place in the squad for the World Cup. With the limelight on Bale, Dawson is one of the players at Spurs who is vastly under-looked, a perfect example of an underrated player.

LB: Ben Davies ? Swansea City

The 20 year old made a remarkable 44 appearances in his debut season, scoring 1 goal to become the clubs youngest goalscorer in the Prem. He has already something to show for his incredible season as he has a League Cup medal to his name as well as winning the clubs Young Player of the Year award. The youngster has showed no fear when coming up against some the league's biggest names. As well as representing his club at a young level, he has stepped up and represented his country too.

RM: Robert Snodgrass ? Norwich City

The Scotland International signed from Leeds United in August 2012. The winger's debut season in the Prem was a good one as he played all but one game, he was also voted second in Norwich's club awards as Player of the Year. While not the fastest, he has made a quick impact scoring 7 goals and has 6 assists to his name also. He is also able to track back to help defend and put his body on the line.

CM: Michael Carrick ? Manchester United

It has been said that Michael Carrick's performances have been overlooked for the past few years but this year they were noticed. He was shortlisted for PFA Player of the Year as he endured a fabulous season with the Red Devils. Although he often played in most games, with Paul Scholes retiring he is now seen as the main man in midfield and the best passer at United. Carrick has 4 Premier League medals and 1 Champions League medal.

CM: Leon Osman ? Everton

Bar two loan spells, Osman has been at Everton all his career. He has made over 300 appearances for the Toffees. He is a very versatile player and an important player in the Everton side as he makes some key passes. Due to his performances, Everton renewed his contract until 2015. He also received his first England appearance in November.

LM: James Milner ? Manchester City

The winger signed from Aston Villa in 2010 for a report ?28m. A hefty price tag but one that he has undoubtedly proven he is worthy of. A very consistent performer for City, he can attack, defend, pass all very well to add to a Premier League medal and a FA winner's medal. In November 2002, he became the Premier League's youngest goalscorer as he scored his first goal for Leeds, he his now second. At 27, he has an impressive 36 caps for England.

ST: Fernando Torres ? Chelsea

The ?50m striker isn't as prolific at hitting the net as he used to be in his Liverpool days his work rate is just as good if not better. He chases every ball down, makes runs and passes. He has played an impressive 64 times in a long season for Chelsea while only scoring 8 goals in the Prem, he has 22 in all competitions and scored a goal in the Europa League final. His performances this season have led to him been called back into the Spanish squad.

ST: Rickie Lambert -Southampton

Without his goals Southampton would have probably been relegated or close to it. He scored an impressive 15 goals this season, the highest for an English striker. He has the ability to score with both his feet and head not only that, his unselfishness makes him an effective team player as he can hold the ball up also. He is unfortunate to have not yet receive an appearance for England but that soon could change.
