Premier League player of the month shortlist - August

Six players have been shortlisted for August's Premier League player of the month award, including West Ham pair Michail Antonio and Said Benrahma.

The dynamic duo have helped the Hammers start off the season in electrifying fashion, with both playing starring roles in the comprehensive wins over Newcastle and Leicester.

Antonio has four goals and three assists to his name already, while Benrahma was also on the scoresheet in both of those games - picking up the man of the match award for his display at St James' Park on the opening weekend.

There are also nominations for Chelsea's Marcos Alonso, Tottenham's Eric Dier, Manchester United's Mason Greenwood, and Demarai Gray of Everton - who has hit the ground running at Goodison Park following his summer arrival from Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso's shortlisting acknowledges a strong start to the season for Chelsea, which has seen the Blues go unbeaten in their first three games. The Spaniard has been given the opportunity to shine after Ben Chilwell's late return to training after his involvement with England at Euro 2020, and he's helped the club keep two clean sheets out of three - also scoring in the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on the first day of the season.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are the only team to win their first three Premier League games, a fine start for new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Crucial to Spurs' success has been their solidity at the back, with Dier in particular playing a starring role.

As for Greenwood, he's shown his keen eye for goal in United's first three fixtures, scoring in all of the Red Devils' games so far. He netted what turned out to be the winner against Leeds on the opening day, the equaliser against Southampton at St Mary's the following week, and another winner this past Sunday - in the 1-0 win over Wolves at Molineux.

Finally, Gray's nomination reflects a strong start to life under Rafa Benitez at Everton. The Toffees have taken seven points from a possible nine, and are one of seven unbeaten sides in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old, who wasn't able to ever secure a regular place at Leicester, has scored twice in that time, particularly impressing in the convincing 2-0 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
