Pep Guardiola has insisted that the Premier League title race is far from over, despite Manchester City enjoying an eight-point lead at the top of the table heading into the New Year.
City have been flawless in recent times, winning their last ten league matches. This incredible form, combined with both Liverpool and Chelsea faltering over the festive period, has allowed them to pull out in front of their title rivals.
However, speaking after City's latest win, an edgy 1-0 away victory over Brentford, Guardiola pointed out that there is still a long way to go this season.
"There are 54 points to play for," Guardiola said (via BBC Sport).
"All of you, thank you for your nice words because we win but I am not going to believe any words you say about 'it is already done or expected' because Chelsea and Liverpool are more than exceptional. One is champions of Europe and the other has been our big rivals over the years.
"The distance is not because they drop points but because we win 10 games in a row."
Although they did get the three points City were far from their best against Brentford and it took a moment of first-half magic from Phil Foden to settle the game. Latching on to Kevin De Bruyne's precise cross, the England international produced a controlled finish to break the deadlock.
Foden had been dropped to the bench by Guardiola in recent times due to disciplinary issues but his manager was full of praise for the youngster after the game.
"Phil has always been outstanding. He's a guy who can play in different positions at an exceptional level.
"We had no doubts about that. Did he have anything to prove? Absolutely not."
Next up for City is a trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on New Year's Day, as they look to maintain their lead at the Premier League summit.
