Great memories of Peter as a player at both Chelsea and Saints.
Great memories of him as a pundit on Sky and Saint Radio.
Great memories of him as a man.
Peter was a smashing fellah. I had the privilege to have him work on Nostalgictv presents…the 1976 FA Cup Final DVD.
He was always full of stories, he helped me enormously track down players for interviews and nothing was too much trouble.
We had a fantastic day shooting the documentary at Chilworth Manor with Ossie, ‘The skipper’ or ‘Pedro’ as he affectionately referred to Peter Rodrigues and Nick Holmes, who Oz still treated as the new boy in class who needed a minder! And the lovely man that Nick Holmes is, recognised this and just let Ossie be himself.
Ossie was clowning around tapping on the window of the studio putting off Peter Rodrigues as he was being interviewed in front of camera.
He had the whole crew in fits as he kept walking in and out asking ‘when does the Oz tell it how it really was’.
Every time we ran late he would ask the hotel desk “is it too late to book in for breakfast tomorrow”. He loved an audience!
We had to stop filming a couple of times as he talked about ‘his little mate’ Bobby Stokes, he would well up and brush away a tear.
It still hurt him that Bobby was no longer around.
The whole of the City of Southampton loves Lawrie McMenemy, but not many loved him more than Ossie. Like ‘the Gaffer’ he was a giant of a man, and like Lawrie I found him an incredibly emotional man.
It had only been a few months, when I met him that he had lost his friend and confident, Ian Hutchinson. He had constantly been in touch with Hutch’s
Family, helping in any way he could to raise money. Almost like he felt responsible.
Peter was a people person. He loved to play football for the fans. He loved the camaraderie of the dressing room.
He couldn’t let go the players he played with, not only the players on the same team, but the opponents as well. He loved the time he had in the game.
He loved the game and loved the people in the game. He talked affectionately about team mates. He still had most of their numbers.
When I researched Nostalgictv presents …. 1970 FA Cup Final DVD, every Chelsea player I spoke to, I asked if he had a telephone number or contact address for another former player or manager, every single one of them said ‘Oz will have his number’. Oz was the fulcrum around which all the memories and well wishing rotated.
They were HIS family. Football was HIS family and his loss feels like a loss to OUR family, the fans family.
Chelsea was Ossies spiritual home. The King of Stamford Bridge as he was affectionately known.
Ossie will be sadly missed on many fronts and my heart and thoughts go out to Lyn, Darren and Ossie’s immediate family who feel his loss most of all.
On the passing away of Ian Hutchinson I wrote an obituary for the Cup Final DVD. “He will be missed enormously in the game and by his former colleagues, but none more so than his old sparring partner Peter Osgood who will miss the old one-two….’til they meet again in a better place than this”
I just wish ……..they weren’t meeting again so soon!
