Manchester City 0-2 Chelsea: Player Ratings as Blues Win Community Shield

Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-0 at Wembley to win the first women's Community Shield since 2008. Millie Bright opened the scoring with an absolute wonder goal, and Erin Cuthbert wrapped up the win in stoppage time after Jill Scott saw red for City, picking up a second yellow card in the second half.

Sam Mewis made her first foray into English football, the first women's Community Shield in a dozen years was handed out, and Sam Kerr...well, we'll get to that.

Let's get into some player ratings.

Manchester City

1. Goalkeepers & Defenders

Ellie Roebuck (GK) - 6/10 - Distribution was as strong as ever and made two good saves to keep out Ji. Could do nothing about Bright's goal, such was the swerve and dip on the ball.

Demi Stokes (LB) -
6/10 - Looked good on the few occasions that she was able to get forward, but saw these opportunities restricted after City went down to ten. Allowed Kirby in behind in the second half in a move that should have led to a Chelsea goal.

Steph Houghton (CB) -
6/10 - Effectively spread the play with a selection of pin point diagonal passes on numerous occasions to create some of City's best openings. Struggled to contain Kerr's movement and was fortunate not to be punished.

Gemma Bonner (CB) -
7/10 - Made a couple of important blocks and interceptions in the first half, and produced an exceptional block to deny Ji in the second.

Esme Morgan (RB) -
6/10 - One of her first starts for City and had a good battle with Reiten, not disgracing herself against one of the best players in the league.

2. Midfielders

Keira Walsh (CDM) - 7/10 - Characteristically tidy in possession and City looked so much better when Walsh started to pop the ball around.

Jill Scott (CM) -
6/10 - Was typically tireless and did well to dispossess Ji deep in the Chelsea half and create an opening for Stanway. Was harshly sent off for a second yellow card following a challenge on Ji just after the hour mark.

Caroline Weir (CM) -
5/10 - An unusually quiet performance from Weir, who was never quite able to exert her influence on the game.

3. Forwards

Lauren Hemp (LW) - 6/10 - Had looked City's most dangerous player but was forced off with a hamstring injury after 25 minutes.

Georgia Stanway (ST) - 6/10 - Tested Berger with a sweetly struck volley from range in the first half and sent a good chance wide in the second. Was lively but became isolated after Scott's dismissal.

Chloe Kelly (RW) - 8/10 - Was really lively after switching to the left following Hemp's injury. Produced a stunning solo run to worm her way into the Chelsea box and could have gone for goal herself, but fed an offside Beckie. Clattered the post with a first half effort and looked threatening throughout.

4. Substitutes

Janine Beckie - 5/10

Sam Mewis - 5/10

Ellen White - N/A

Chelsea

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Ann-Katrin Berger (GK) - 7/10 - Produced two good saves to keep out Stanway in the first half and confidently claimed a couple of corners.

Jonna Andersson (LB) - 7/10 - Typified the Chelsea performance. Solid defensively and strong going forward.

Millie Bright (CB) - 7/10 - Opened the scoring with an absolute thunderbolt from distance. Was rarely troubled defensively.

Magdalena Eriksson (CB) - 7/10 - So solid defensively, her performance characterised by a last ditch tackle to keep out White in the dying seconds.

Maren Mjelde (RB) - 5/10 - Not playing in her natural position, Mjelde was targeted by City and was given the run around by Kelly at times. Played in a dangerous ball in the build up to Chelsea's second.

6. Midfielders

Sophie Ingle (DCM) - 8/10 - Kept Chelsea ticking over is possession and expertly protected the back four. A classic Sophie Ingle performance.

Melanie Leupolz (CM) - 8/10 - An impressive debut from the German as part of a thoroughly impressive Chelsea midfield. Energetic, tenacious and strong on the ball, Chelsea have a real player on their hands.

Ji So-Yun (CM) - 8/10 - Oozed class from the get go. Picked out Kerr with an inch perfect pass and nutmegged Walsh inside the first 15 minutes. Her vision, awareness and ability to pick passes shone throughout.

7. Forwards

Fran Kirby (RW) - 7/10 Really grew into the game and looked back to her best after nearly a year without a start with her intricate turns and deft touches. Put one on a plate for Kerr in the second half, but...

Sam Kerr (ST) -
5/10 - Looked menacing with her movement to get in behind the City backline, but it was a different story in front of goal, wasting five excellent chances.

Guro Reiten (LW) -
7/10 - Sent in a selection of teasing crosses and was a thorn in the side of the City backline throughout.

8. Substitutes

Erin Cuthbert - 7/10

Beth England -
6/10

Niamh Charles -
N/A

Jessie Flemming
- N/A
