Man Utd & Chelsea Stances on Potential Edinson Cavani January Deal Revealed

Manchester United are rumoured to be ‘tentatively’ exploring the idea of signing veteran Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani this month, while Chelsea also remain interested. Both clubs, however, appear to have reservations.

Cavani, who has asked to leave PSG, has scored over 300 club goals in all competitions in the last 10 years alone across and has long been one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.

The Uruguayan has been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid, with both of his parents separately telling media outlets that joining Diego Simeone’s club is their son’s preference. But a report from Marca explains that Atletico must first remove Thomas Lemar from the wage bill, suggesting the process of joining them is a little more complicated than first thought.

United are in desperate need of reinforcements throughout the squad, but a forward has become of particular importance since Marcus Rashford suffered a back injury.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Old Trafford club have been ‘offered the chance’ to sign Cavani and are said to be ‘cautiously’ considering it. The problem, however, is that United officials have concerns over repeating previous mistakes they made with Alexis Sanchez.

Rumoured figures for Cavani are wages of £360,000 per week on a minimum term of 18 months. When taking into account his increasingly patchy fitness record, it may not be a gamble worth taking.

Chelsea’s doubts stem from a reluctance to meet PSG’s asking price of £12.6m for a player who is out of contract at the end of the season and would be available for free.

According to The Sun, Chelsea have started exploring other options and have re-opened talks with Lyon over the availability of former Celtic star Moussa Dembele. The Stamford Bridge club could be made to pay up to £45m if they want the 23-year-old now.

But Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas actually declared earlier this week that his star players are not for sale this month, commenting: “We want Moussa Dembele and Lucas Tousart to stay. Now is not the time for us to weaken our team.”
