Liverpool & Chelsea in Race to Sign Lyon Star After Scouting Mission

Liverpool and Chelsea are interested in Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar, with the latter having watched the 20-year-old for 'several weeks', according to reports in France.

Aouar, who has been in impressive form for Lyon, has been a key player in their steady start to the season as they sit fourth in Ligue 1 and second to Manchester City in their Champions League group.

And according to French outlet RMC, it's earned him some flattering glances, reporting that Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea are the chief interested party, having sent scouts to monitor the central midfielder, who can also operate on the left wing or in the number ten role as and when required.

The report also claims Liverpool have had a 'close look' at Aouar, who has scored five and assisted four in 17 appearances so far this term.

The Reds have been linked with a move for a creative midfield player since the summer, with Lyon's Nabil Fekir the heavily reported main target before the move fell through.

It's difficult to see where he'd fit in exactly at the Reds, however, with competition for places in midfield high, following the summer signing Naby Keita - while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also remains on the sidelines with injury.

Chelsea are faced with a similar issue, as Matteo Kovacic, Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek battle it out for the remaining midfield slot alongside established starters Jorginho and N'Golo Kante

The two clubs, currently separated by two points in an exciting Premier League title race, seem to be the front-runners for his signature if reports are to be believed, so it may well come down to which of them can offer more in the way of first-team football.
