Liverpool & Chelsea Eye Celta Vigo Star Maxi Gómez as Both Sides Look to Bolster Attacking Options

Liverpool and Chelsea are believed to be interested in signing Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gómez, who could be available for around £35m in the summer.

While the Reds have been a greatly improved side defensively this season - a factor that has seen them go toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the Premier League title race - they appear to have lost their once potent goal threat, with the likes of Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi all struggling for consistency in the 2018/19 campaign.

According to the Mirror, former Reds favourite Luis Suárez has informed Jürgen Klopp that his Uruguay teammate would be an ideal signing for the club, given his relentless style of play and keen eye for goal. The 22-year-old has bagged nine goals for his side in La Liga this season, and featured briefly in the 2018 World Cup for his country.

Liverpool certainly won't be alone in their pursuit of the talented youngster; BarcelonaTottenham Hotspur and even West Ham United have been linked with the footballer in recent times. However, Klopp is known for his ability to develop starlets into top class players, which could prove a key factor for Gómez is choosing his future destination.

Chelsea are also cited as frontrunners to sign the former Defensor Sporting man. Despite being given a two-window transfer ban by FIFA, the Blues are likely to appeal the decision on Monday, with an eye to delaying the action until after the summer. If this happens, then Chelsea will no doubt embark on spending spree to tide them over until their sanction is lifted.

The west Londoners have struggled to find a reliable striker since selling Diego Costa back to Atlético Madrid last year, and will be eager to snap up a clinical marksman to improve their fortunes.

However, if Maurizio Sarri's side are unable to secure Champions League qualification for next season, then they may be unable to attract the interest of their primary targets.
