Sven's expected midfield quartet is Beckham, Butt, Gerrard, Scholes- despite Scholes having failed to score an international goal for three year and Nicky Butt playing no more than bit part role at Old Trafford.

But there is still hope for Lamps, with Sven revealing: "In the midfield, I suppose players like Beckham, Scholes and Gerrard should be there. I think anyone would say that. After that, we will see.

"Let's start working and see how everyone is and who is in the best shape and form. I don't like to pick the team today. Of course, I have it in my head as to what I should like to see, but the door is open for all eight of the midfielders.

"I have to see whether my thoughts work out in the friendly games or the training sessions. I have an idea but I don't want to tell you before I start working on it.''
