Sven Goran Eriksson has axed Frank Lampard from his England squad which will face Greece, after the Chelsea midfielder's drunken shame.

Lampard was one of four Blues players who were exposed last weekend after a drinking session got out of control in front of a number of American tourists in a hotel near Heathrow Airport, just hours after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

And the £11million midfielder has endured further punishment to the two weeks' wages he has already been fined, by being axed from Eriksson's party for the crucial World Cup qualifier with Greece at Old Trafford on Saturday.

It is understood that Eriksson was far from happy at seeing Lampard's name exposed in the press and a Chelsea spokesman reportedly told the News of the World: "Mr Eriksson has made his feelings known to the club. We understand why he has taken this action and we are in no position to argue with it.

"The club took equally decisive steps to punish the Chelsea players involved by fining them two weeks' wages and we trust there will no repeat in the future."

The news will come as a major blow to the player, with his place at next summer's World Cup finals - should England see off Greece and seal qualification - still very much up for grabs.
