The 23-year-old confirmed talks were held with Chelsea over a summer move to Stamford Bridge when talking to German publication SportBild [via Sport Witness].

"They said that they have me in their plans, and that was always a dream of mine.

"Chelsea showed the most interest and it was a very good offer this time.

"I would have been the most expensive Spanish player ever."

Despite Chelsea's willingness to hand over more than the £50million they paid for fellow Spaniard Fernando Torres in 2011, Morata stayed at Madrid, with Zidane determined to keep the striker at his childhood club.

Chelsea's Premier League rivals, Arsenal, also showed interest in Morata before Real Madrid activated the €30million buy-back clause in the then Juventus players contract.

Morata has made six appearances and scored two goals since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu, including a late winner against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.
