Jorginho intent on signing new Chelsea contract once restrictions end

Jorginho’s agent has confirmed that the priority is for the midfielder to sign a new contract with Chelsea, despite interest from Serie A giants Juventus.

Chelsea are currently blocked from renewing player contracts as a result of UK government sanctions against owner Roman Abramovich in the wake of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The club is in the process of being sold, which would see restrictions lifted. In that scenario, agent Joao Santos has said it would be the preference for Jorginho to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

However, the player’s camp will remain open to offers from other clubs should Chelsea be unable to secure a deal. For context, Jorginho’s current deal expires in 2023 – if restrictions are not lifted soon, Chelsea are also unable to sell any players who remain under contract until they are.

“I haven't talked to Juventus, but I know of their interest in Jorginho,” Santos told CalcioMercato.it. “We have a contract with Chelsea until 2023 and it is a particular moment for the club, where there are no negotiations because the market is blocked both in entry and in exit.

“If the situation unfolds, the priority will be to deal with the renewal. Should Chelsea fail to renew their contract, then we will listen to all the teams involved.”

Speaking in November, Santos confirmed it is Chelsea’s intention to renew Jorginho’s contract, although the following month he revealed that talks were yet to begin.

As things stand, it remains to be seen how a prospective takeover will affect the day to day running of the club and whether it means replacing staff at executive level, which could in turn have an impact on things like contract negotiations and recruitment strategy.
