John Terry Among Frontrunners to Be New Derby Manager

Aston Villa assistant boss John Terry has emerged as one of the frontrunners in the race to be named new Derby County boss.

The Rams have been without a manager since they parted ways with Phillip Cocu on 14 November. The Dutchman exited Pride Park with the club bottom of the Championship table having taken just six points from their opening 11 games.

Wayne Rooney and Liam Rosenior have been placed in 'co-interim charge' at the club, however, the move has failed to impact performances with the Rams going on to pick up just one point from the pair's first three games in charge.

Despite Rooney openly confessing his desire to take permanent charge at the club, Sky Sports claim that Aston Villa assistant boss John Terry has now emerged as one of the favourites to take the job.

Terry himself has made no secret of his wish to step into management having spent over two years as Dean Smith's deputy at Villa Park, and is said to have been impressed by the platform afforded to his former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard at the club.

Lampard spent just one season at Pride Park and came within 90 minutes of leading the club back to the Premier League for the first time since 2008, only to be denied by Terry's current club Aston Villa in the 2019 playoff final.

Terry is also said to be excited at the prospect of a takeover and new investment at the club, with Sheikh Khaled's Derventio Holdings in the process of buying out owner Mel Morris.

The current Rams owner is said to be assisting Sheikh Khaled in his pursuit of a new boss while the legal process of selling the club takes place.

Derby host Coventry on Tuesday night in what could prove to be a huge clash with the Sky Blues themselves just two points above the relegation drop zone.
