Joe Cole could leave Stamford Bridge

Last updated : 26 October 2009 By Paul Lagan

Joe Cole is in his last year of contract at Stamford Bridge, but appears no closer to signing a new one.

He is just a couple of months away from being able to talk to other clubs and could walk away from SW6 in July.

Chelsea have given new contracts to Kalou and Alex in recent weeks.

It's a World Cup year and Cole understands it's importance.

It's understood that he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge and at 27 this new contract will be the most important of his career.

Cole has just recovered from a serious knee injury and is looking to cement his place in the Chelsea side.

England boss Fabio Capello will only take fit players who are playing well for their clubs to South Africa next year.

Cole knows that, the whole of English football knows that - that is why Cole is desperate to play for Chelsea.

Before playing his first league match since January 11, Cole has been fit for weeks.

He played the full 90 minutes against QPR in the Carling Cup a month ago.

In that time Cole must have being wondering if he was ever going to get back into the side.

He was on the bench in the Champions League group match last Wednesday night but saw no action as Carlo Ancelotti preferred to play from the subs' bench Zhirkov, Malouda and Sturridge.

My insider reports that Joe was less that pleased with being overlooked and had a few words with people within the management team.

If that is correct, then they must have listened to what Joe had to say, because the midfielder was back in the side and played brilliantly against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Cole his advisors and Chelsea have not issued any statements regarding a new contract as yet.

Does this suggest that Ancelotti does no fancy Cole?

He called him a genius on Saturday.

Joe is an idol to the Chelsea faithful and the idea that he could be allowed to leave Chelsea unthinkable.

But is Joe thinking the un thinkable?
