Jess Carter targets regular starting role after signing new Chelsea contract

Chelsea full-back Jess Carter has signed a new one-year contract with an option to extend to 2023, and has her eyes fixed firmly on securing a regular starting role for the WSL champions.

23-year-old Carter joined Chelsea from Birmingham in 2018 and began to enjoy some consistent chances as a right-back towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Carter is already the fifth Chelsea player to sign a contract extension in 2021 after Fran Kirby, Sophie Ingle, Maren Mjelde and goalkeeper Carly Telford. Netherlands international defender Aniek Nouwen has also already signed for the club ahead of next season.

But, despite starting in the Champions League final against Barcelona, Carter by her own admission has never been one of the first names on Emma Hayes’ teamsheet. Her ambition now that she has been rewarded with a new contract is to change that.
