It's Time for Tammy Abraham to Prove He Really Is an Elite Premier League Striker

Tammy Abraham has enjoyed a strong breakthrough campaign with Chelsea but to make it an outstanding one, the young Blues star needs to step it up another notch.

Abraham's 13-goal Premier League return is impressive, especially considering this time last year he was running the channels with Aston Villa in the Championship.

However, football moves fast and, at the very top, there is no place to hide. In spite of his rapid rise with Chelsea this campaign, it's now time for Abraham to raise his game yet another iota to prove he is the player the Blues need him to be.

With the European Championships around the corner and England skipper Harry Kane sidelined, Abraham has been handed the perfect chance to stake his claim to be both his club and country's leading man.

Instead of grabbing the bull by the horns, however, the 22-year-old has been rather tepid in recent games drawing a blank in his last three Blues outings.

Despite his double-figure goal tally this season, Abraham has often been caught on his heels this season, leading to criticism over his natural goalscoring instincts.

In his side's 2-2 draw with Leicester on Saturday, Abraham could have helped himself to a couple of goals but he failed to gamble on deliveries into the box.

One moment in particular, stands out. Reece James' wicked delivery was begging to be prodded home but Abraham tentatively stabbed at it with the outside of his foot and the chance was gone.

It's moments like that where the Chelsea frontman really needs to improve in the final third, to go from being a solid Premier League striker to an 'elite' top-flight marksman.

He is clearly boss Frank Lampard's first-choice striker and they are big shoes to fill, given the names who have lead the line for Chelsea in the past - one Didier Drogba springs to mind.

The role of lone striker can be a difficult one for even the most experienced forward so Abraham has performed admirably in the number nine position but at a top club like Chelsea, only the best will be accepted.

Big players come to the fore in big games and perhaps the biggest standout statistic is Abraham's return of just two goals against any of the Premier League's current top six.

Those strikes both came in the 2-2 home draw against Sheffield United in August, and although the Blades are currently fifth in the table, they would not be considered one of the league's big hitters.

If you look at the sides who traditionally make up the top six alongside Chelsea, then Abraham has struck just once when facing the big boys.

He grabbed the winner away to Arsenal at the Emirates but aside from that and an assist in the reverse fixture, his goal contribution in those 'big' games has been lacking.

Now it may be harsh to put all the blame on Tammy as Chelsea have only won two of the six matches against their biggest rivals but it is in those encounters where he will be remembered.

And it's not as if the Englishman doesn't have it in his locker, he claimed the match ball away to high flying Wolves, hitting a 21-minute hat-trick in Chelsea's 5-2 victory in September.

So Abraham can do it, now he just needs to provide it on a more consistent basis and against those teams sitting higher in the table.

If Chelsea are to cling onto their position of fourth and the final Champions League spot then Abraham will play a huge part. He will have to.

Lampard frankly has no alternative, clearly the Blues boss craved a backup striker to ease the burden on his young star, but was left frustrated in the January transfer window.

Wantaway forward Oliver Giroud, frozen out of the picture at Stamford Bridge, looked certain to be on his way but no move materialised and he now looks set to resume his place on the bench.

While striker Michy Batshuayi has shown glimpses during his Chelsea career, but only in short spates and nothing to convince fans that he will be anything more than a reserve.

So it's left to Abraham to shoulder the responsibility, not only for his club but now it would seem, also for his country.

News that England's main man Kane could struggle to regain full fitness by the time Euro 2020 swings around, has Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate looking for suitable deputies.

Southgate handed Abraham his competitive debut as a substitute in the Three Lions' 2-1 defeat away to the Czech Republic in October.

In Abraham's next appearance for the national side, he opened his account, scoring in England's 7-0 home demolition of Montenegro in November.

Abraham is very much on his country's radar, it's now just a question of whether he can raise his game towards the business end of the season and cement his place in the squad.

The England youngster has thrust himself in the limelight with several standout displays for Chelsea but he hasn't shone so brightly in recent matches.

Now is the time to reignite the blue touch paper, drive Chelsea forward and then light up the international stage for England in the summer.
