As soon as the final whistle was blown by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo, Didier Drogba was up off the bench from where he was sat following his substitution and headed straight for the man in the middle.

The Ivory Coast striker was incandescent with rage at Ovrebe's performance and refused to leave the pitch, shouting at the ref.

Drogba was given a yellow card by the Norwegian who looked visibly shaken as he tried to get to the safety of his changing room.

Drogba was separated from Ovrebo by security guards but was still fuming as he headed off the pitch.

Guus Hiddink said of the inflammatory incident: "I understand Didier Drogba's reaction.

"He was full of adrenaline after the game. He did not go too far, he did not hit anyone, I will protect him."
