Frank Lampard Warns Players Over No-Nonsense Transfer Policy as Chelsea Boss Eyes Title Challenge

Frank Lampard has got his eyes set of challenging for the Premier League title in the near future, and the Chelsea boss has insisted he's prepared to make some tough decisions in the transfer market to get there.

Chelsea's new-look side currently sit 35 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, although the Blues are still on course to qualify for next season's Champions League - something many predicted to be too far out of reach for Lampard this year.

The Chelsea boss has said that the board are happy to be challenging to the top four this season, but his ultimate goal is to get his hands on another Premier League title and he's prepared to make some tough decisions in the transfer market to do it.

"There is a reason why we are where we are," Lampard said, quoted by the Express. "We have not challenged in the Premier League for a couple of years. We want to close that gap. Come the summer, of course as a club we want to move forward and make some decisions.

"We are certainly on the same page here when I speak with the board and we have our conversations. We know we are fighting for fourth place. Man City and Liverpool have set an incredible standard, we had some outside influences with the transfer ban and a huge player in Eden Hazard leaving.

"How long can these players go on being considered young? I don’t know. I suppose it’s when they have a bank of games behind them. Or when a younger player comes through."

Chelsea had a rude awakening in the Champions League last week when Bayern Munich picked up a 3-0 win in the first leg of their last 16 match at Stamford Bridge.

It's left the Blues with an almost impossible mountain to climb in Bavaria, but Lampard has still been able to take positives from their defeat as his youthful team continues to build for long-term success.

"I don’t think of them as young. If they train at a level and play at a level, I’m not concerned," he added. "Maturity will come for them, that’s why we have to give them some leeway this year.

"For Mason Mount and Reece James on Tuesday, it was a huge game for them in terms of their learning curve. I didn’t play my first Champions League game till my mid-twenties."
