Frank Lampard Responds to Carabao Cup Touchline Spat With Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has labelled his touchline spat with Tottenham counterpart Jose Mourinho during Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup tie between the clubs as a bit of ‘fun’, with each coach firing jibes back and forth at one another.

At one point, Mourinho was heard calling out Lampard for seemingly barking more instructions at his players in a winning position than if they were losing.

“We were having some fun on the line,” Lampard commented afterwards, via ChelseaFC.com.

“I get on well with Jose and he said that to me. I commented on the fact he seemed to speak to the referee more than to his players, so it was just a moment for us.

“I have a huge amount of respect for Jose no matter what we say on the touchline. I think he was probably feeling the sense of the first half and how it was but all was well at the end of the game and that will never change.”

Chelsea led the tie from early in the first half when summer signing Timo Werner got his first goal for the club. But Erik Lamela equalised for Spurs shortly before the end in north London and it was the hosts who went on to win the penalty shootout when Mason Mount missed the decisive kick.

Lampard called it a ‘disappointing night’ in the context of getting knocked out of the cup, but insists that Mount retains his full support.

The other major takeaway from the night from Chelsea’s perspective was an impressive debut for new £22m goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who Lampard called ‘very good’.

Lampard elaborated: “He made a couple of good saves, one particularly good. He caught a few balls and even the one when he came for it and didn’t catch, the idea that he wants to and wants to be positive is not a bad thing. I was very pleased with every part of his game really.”
