Frank Lampard Reflects on 'Sobering Reality Check' After Bayern Munich Defeat

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard described Tuesday night’s 3-0 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge as a ‘wake-up call’, with only an unprecedented comeback enough to overturn the deficit in the second leg next month.

A quick-fire Serge Gnabry brace early in the second half did the damage, with Robert Lewandowski grabbing a third for Bayern and Marcos Alonso getting sent off as Chelsea finished with 10 men.

Bayern outclassed the Premier League side, winning the possession battle as well as having more shots and more shots on target.

“The levels of Bayern Munich were fantastic. They are a really strong team and unless we were to get everything right and bang on, it was going to be a tough night potentially,” Lampard conceded, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“We didn’t get everything bang on. We weren’t confident on the ball. That was my biggest disappointment from start to finish,” he added.

In what has so far been a transition season for Chelsea, Lampard described this defeat as ‘sobering’.

“Sometimes you have to be brutally honest about it and they outclassed us. It’s quite sobering. I’m disappointed we couldn’t have done better against them, but it’s a real reality check for everyone individually in the dressing room,” he explained.

“We have to take it on the chin and look at yourself and no one else, and the levels we need to attain at this club, which this club has attained in the past and we have to work to get back there.”

The return leg will be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich on 18 March. Chelsea would have to match Bayern’s 3-0 win to take the tie to extra time. Any other Chelsea victory by three goals would see them progress on away goals.

However, it must be said that no team has ever won a Champions League knockout tie after losing the first leg 3-0 at home and so any such comeback would be a huge shock.
