Farewell Ron, nice to have known you

Today is the funeral of Ron Hockings.
Ron died last month and was Chelsea's "Mr Statman".
He produced books about almost every Chelsea team ever - youth, reserves and first team.

I met Ron about 16 years' ago when I first started to report at Chelsea matches.

He was a gentle soul, who had a fantastic memory for names, dates, and of course, players.
He was ever-helpful and a credit to his family.
If there was a Chelsea game on, then Ron would inevitably be around. compiling teamsheets to add to the canon of material about who played for the Blues.
The books became essential research tools for anyone wanting to know about Chelsea's history. And yes it does start before 1996.

Ron was a familar fixture in and around Stamford Bridge and the training ground - I would often spot him among the Chelsea faifthful waiting for the coach to arrive at away grounds.
"What you doing, Ron," I'd ask.
"Making sure all the players are off the coach and ready to play," he once said.
Then he would check the teamsheet against who actually played and another match would be registered.
Farewell Ron. Have a word with Ossie when you see him - tell him he's playing Saturday.
