Michael Essien has been charged by Uefa with gross unsporting conduct.

The disciplinary proceedings relate to Essien's challenge on Liverpool's Dietmar Hamann in Tuesday's Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge.

It's the tackle that went unpunished which was the subject of the media outcry and now Uefa has decided to take action.

The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body will meet on 15 December.
