Emerson Palmieri Provides Update on Chelsea Future Following Speculation Over Return to Italy

Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri has hinted at a return to Serie A, though stressed he is happy in west London and holds admiration for the club's manager Frank Lampard.

Emerson was signed by Antonio Conte in January 2018 for £18m from Serie A side Roma. For much of his time at Chelsea the Italy international has mainly served as Marcos Alonso's understudy, though has enjoyed a temporary rise up the pecking order this season.

The Brazilian-born Emerson moved to Serie A with Palermo on loan from his boyhood club Santos in 2014, before Roma snapped him up the following season. He spent three and a half seasons in the Italian top flight.

In an interview on Sky Italia, Emerson reflected on his time in Italy, even suggesting a potential return may be on the cards.

"It may happen that I come back," he said. "But at the moment I am very happy in England with Chelsea, I also have a contract and I am very calm."

However, the 25-year-old was keen to praise the manager of his current side, saying: "He is very intelligent, he is young and he knows how to communicate with the players, he was an idol here at Chelsea.

"He will grow a lot, for now I found myself very well, he is also of heart.

"All the fans are in love with him. Every day I try to listen to him, he was a fantastic player, I've never seen a midfielder capable of scoring 400 goals. Before, I only saw him in video games, working with him is a wonderful feeling."

Lampard started Emerson in his first five games at the helm but since then the left-back has endured something of a stop-start campaign, with injuries and competition from Alonso limiting his minutes.
