Eidur: I Will Survive!

Last updated : 08 July 2004 By Rich Godden
Eidur was considered by most Blues fans to be the outstanding striker at the club last season, despite the arrival of Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo the previous summer.

However, the Icelandic international is taking nothing for granted, as he knows he will have to prove himself all over again to new coach Jose Mourinho. Eidur said "I always knew I'd be back for pre-season but I didn't know if I was staying for good. I never thought of leaving and never would until the club tells me to.

"It's still the same situation as last season. As far as I can see I'm staying at Chelsea, I love it here and always thought we would get better.

"I never want to play for any other team and at this stage of my career I still have a lot to show as a Chelsea player. I don't think I've reached my full potential. With hard work and confidence I'll be able to blossom.

"It's frustrating that I've never won anything. I'm still 25 so hopefully in the next few years I'll be part of a winning team at Chelsea. It's something I dream of.

"I realise I'll never win anything with Iceland as a national team and that's just being realistic. The only trophies I will win are in club football and my best chance will be at Chelsea.

"It excites me that I'm playing for a team which is challenging for trophies and hopefully with a bit more time they will come."

Let's see how Eidur will get on this season without his great striking partner, and good friend, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink...
