Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Preview: How to Watch on TV, Live Stream, Kick Off Time & Team Ne

Chelsea's quest for Champions League football comes down to the final day of the season as Frank Lampard's side host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues can guarantee qualification for Europe's elite competition with a point at Stamford Bridge, with the final spot going to one of Manchester United and Leicester City, who meet at the same time.

In his debut season as Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has taken the Blues to the FA Cup final and within one point of Champions League qualification

Wolves' Champions League aspirations were effectively dashed when Burnley's Chris Wood converted a 96th minute penalty to secure a 1-1 draw last week. Nuno Espírito Santo's side go into the game in sixth place, one point above Tottenham Hotspur, with both assured of their places in the top seven.

However, if Arsenal were to beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final then the Gunners would replace the seventh-placed side in next season's Europa League qualifiers.

Team News

N'Golo Kanté is a doubt for Sunday's match as he struggles with a hamstring injury

Chelsea's dynamic midfielder N'Golo Kanté has missed the team's last five matches since hobbling off against Watford at the start of July. The French World Cup winner missed the midweek fixture against Liverpool with a lingering hamstring but may be available for this crucial game.

Fellow midfielder Billy Gilmour - who was Lampard's initial replacement for Kanté - is also a doubt as the 19-year-old battles with a knee injury.

Wolves may have played their first game of the 2019/20 season more than 12 months ago when Sunday's meeting rolls around, but the Midlands outfit are proving remarkably robust as a fully fit squad is set to travel to west London.

Predicted Lineups

Chelsea: Arrizabalaga; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rüdiger; James, Kovacic, Jorginho, Alonso; Willian, Giroud, Pulisic.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Patricio; Boly, Coady, Saïss; Doherty, Moutinho, Neves, Otto; Traoré, Jiménez, Podence.

Recent Form

In the space of six days during this post-pandemic Premier League, Chelsea managed to triumph over the defending champions Manchester City and then suffer defeat at the hands of relegation-threatened West Ham.

Lampard looks on as his side squander a lead to ultimately lose 3-2 away to West Ham United in early July

Much like their season overall, Lampard's side have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous, rarely operating in a happy middle ground - they are yet to record a draw since football resumed (five wins, three defeats).

Since football returned from its three-month hiatus, only three teams can better Wolves' Premier League points tally - and Chelsea are not one of them. From eight games, Santo's side have collected 16 points in another impressive season for a club who, as recently as 2014, were competing in the third tier.

Here's how each side has fared in their last five outings.

Chelsea

Liverpool 5-3 Chelsea (22/7)
Manchester United 1-3 Chelsea (19/7)
Chelsea 1-0 Norwich City (14/7)
Sheffield United 3-0 Chelsea (11/7)
Crystal Palace 2-3 Chelsea (7/7)

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 Crystal Palace (20/7)
Burnley 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers (15/7)
Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 Everton (12/7)
Sheffield United 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers (8/7)
Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-2 Arsenal (4/7)

Prediction

Nuno Espírito Santo has already surpassed the points tally his side reached last season

Both teams go into Sunday's meeting with the prospect of European qualification looming over them which will undoubtedly make for a tense affair.

Chelsea only need a point to secure what they need but Lampard's side have gone out of their way to prove that defending is not their strong suit - no side in the top half has conceded more goals than Chelsea's 54 so far (Wolves have only let in 38).

While Lampard almost certainly won't play for a draw given these defensive deficiencies, that may very well be the outcome between two sides who can cause problems for any team on their day.

Prediction: Chelsea 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
