Chelsea Trigger 1-Year Extension of Olivier Giroud's Contract With Veteran Striker Staying Put

Chelsea have confirmed they have triggered a clause in Olivier Giroud's contract to extend the Frenchman's stay at Stamford Bridge until 2021, having agreed to the option last month.

Giroud had been repeatedly linked with a move away from west London during the January transfer window, with the likes of Tottenham and Inter both heavily linked with the veteran forward.

No such deal materialised however, and now Chelsea have confirmed on their official website that the striker will add another year to his two-and-a-half year stay with the Blues.

Fresh from the news that his time with the club will stretch beyond the 2019/20 season, Giroud expressed his delight at putting pen to paper on the deal.

"I am delighted to continue my journey and adventure at Chelsea," he said. "I can’t wait to get back to playing and enjoying competitive football with my teammates.

"I’m looking forward to wearing the Chelsea shirt again, especially in front of our fans at a full Stamford Bridge, whenever it is safe to do so."

Frank Lampard also weighed in on the deal, saying of the extension: "Since I have been back at Chelsea, Olivier has been brilliant as a professional and as a man in general.

"He has great qualities to help the squad both on and off the pitch, not only with his talent but with the example he sets every day and the experience he brings to our young squad. I am very pleased that will continue next season."

Those sentiments were echoed by director Marina Granovskaia, who was expressed her joy at seeing the 33-year-old, who has 21 goals in 76 outings for the side, remain with the club.

She said: "It is clear to the club that Olivier continues to be a player we want in the squad, especially as we maintain the important balance between top-quality experience and the exciting young talent we have available, and his attitude when asked to play a supporting role has been exemplary.

"He is a proven trophy-winner who we hope can help our new generation to become that too."
