Chelsea are ready to reward manager Thomas Tuchel with a new and improved contract as a reward for the incredible job he has done since replacing Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.
Blues legend Lampard lost his job off the back of a run of five defeats in eight Premier League games which left the club sliding towards mid-table. But Tuchel made an enormous impact more or less immediately and could yet finish the season by delivering two trophies.
Chelsea will contest both the FA Cup and Champions League finals later this month, while Tuchel has also overseen a rise back up the Premier League table into the top four.
The German coach was initially given a short-term 18 month deal when he was first appointed, but a new contract is already in the offing.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea want to offer Tuchel a new two-year deal with an option for a third. It would also mean a pay rise on his current salary of £7m per season and he is said to be keen to sign it because he has had reservations about the short nature of his existing terms.
The proposed new deal would run until 2023 and could be extended to 2024. It is said to have become standard practice for Chelsea to hand out such contracts to managers because of the club’s track record of sackings, with shorter incremental deals reducing severance pay outs.
Aside from Tuchel, it is claimed that Chelsea have plans to negotiate a new contract with N’Golo Kante, while also triggering a one-year extension clause for veteran centre-back Thiago Silva.
Kante last signed a new Chelsea contract in 2018 and has another two years left on that deal, but the Frenchman has once again underlined his importance to the club this season, highlighted by back-to-back man of the match performances in both legs of the Champions League semi-final.
