Chelsea Linked With Ambitious Move for Atlético Madrid's Jan Oblak

Chelsea's interest in a new goalkeeper has attracted varying levels of realism from the media. Keeping the struggling Kepa Arrizabalaga seems realistic, pursuing Ajax's André Onana is still plausible, but a move for Manchester United's Dean Henderson would be problematic and unlikely.

However, if you want to go to the next level of craziness/ambition, how about a player-plus-cash deal for Atlético Madrid's Jan Oblak?

The Mirror state that Chelsea have made Oblak - arguably the world's best keeper - their top goalkeeper target this summer as they see the Slovenia international as the perfect man to address their defensive woes.

Frank Lampard probably does see Oblak as the dream replacement (you know, because he's really, really good), but whether signing him is possible is a completely different matter entirely.

Oblak, whose decision to reject Chelsea forced them to sign Arrizabalaga in the first place, signed a new contract last year which runs until 2023 and contains a €120m (£109m) release clause, but Chelsea are said to value the 27-year-old at less than £100m and hope to finance most of that move by offering Arrizabalaga in exchange.

Kepa Arrizabalaga is yet tor really impress at Stamford Bridge

So, Chelsea want to pay less than Atlético believe Oblak is worth, and they want Los Rojiblancos to agree to swap arguably the world's finest for someone who is just two years younger and nowhere near the same level?

Earlier in the season, there might have been something to this. Atlético were struggling in La Liga and looked like missing out on Champions League football, which might have forced Oblak out the exit door. However, they have turned things around, have already cemented fourth place and could even finish third.

Oblak is seen by many as the best around

Oblak has no need to leave Atlético, and Diego Simeone would go ballistic if arguably his star player was swapped for the struggling Arrizabalaga, especially if Chelsea only offered up a small fee in exchange.

Chelsea's goalkeeper business will likely come down to money. With big moves for Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Declan Rice all on the to-do list, finding that extra huge sum to throw at Atlético to make them agree to this seems more than a little unlikely.
