Chelsea Confirm Niamh Charles Signing Following Recent Liverpool Departure

Chelsea Women have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool forward Niamh Charles ahead of next season on a three-year contract until 2023.

The news follows Charles’ departure from relegated Liverpool last week, at which time she expressed her desire for a new challenge. Joining the 2019/20 WSL champions ticks that box.

Competition for places in the Chelsea team is already fierce but the move will introduce Charles, who has only just turned 21, to a higher level of coaching and better funded facilities, as well as plenty of international calibre new teammates from around the world.

Despite her young age, Charles had been a first-team player at Liverpool, the club she supported as a child, since 2016 aged 16. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes has now revealed that the Blues have had their eye on her ever since then, describing her as a ‘tenacious and willing competitor’.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Charles herself said it is a ‘really proud day’.

“Emma Hayes is one of the most highly-regarded managers in our game. She was a huge part of my decision to come to the club. I know she will help me fulfil my potential and I will be working hard to make sure I give myself every opportunity to learn, develop and improve as a player,” Charles said.

Manager Emma Hayes is a big lure at Chelsea

“I’m joining the current WSL champions and this club regularly competes for trophies domestically and in Europe – something I can’t wait to be a part of.

“I want to say to the fans that I will always give my all and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of them at Kingsmeadow. The support Chelsea get is among the best in the league and I’m sure that together, we’ll enjoy lots of success.”
