Chelsea confirm Andreas Christensen departure as retained list released

Chelsea have revealed their retained and release list for the 2022/23 season, with Andreas Christensen among the players who will be leaving the club.

Christensen's summer departure has been expected for some time with 90min reporting back in March that he would be joining Barcelona when his contract expires.

Chelsea had been confident of tying down the Dane to fresh terms only for the player to repeatedly reject their offers. This, combined with his apparent refusal to play in the FA Cup final defeat to Liverpool last month, means he departs his boyhood club under somewhat of a black cloud.

Christensen is not the only player who is leaving Chelsea this summer. Danny Drinkwater is being released too after failing to make an impact at the club. Drinkwater signed back in 2017 for £35m and went on to make just 23 appearances in all competitions.

Towards the end of his time in west London he attempted to resurrect career with a string of unsuccessful loan spells, and he most recently spent time with Championship side Reading.

Listen now to 90min's brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott SaundersGraeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. This week Harry Symeou steps in for Scott and the trio discuss the futures of Bukayo Saka, Rafael Leao, Romelu Lukaku, Kalvin Phillips, Youri Tielemans, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Raphinha, Gabriel Jesus and more.

Charly Musonda is also being released having made just seven first-team appearances at Stamford Bridge since coming through the academy.

Completing the departees is Jake Clarke-Salter, who has been at the club for 16 years. The 24-year-old enjoyed no less than six loan spells as a Chelsea player and impressed for Coventry City this season.
