Carlton The Villain

Carlton spent last season on loan at Charlton, but much of his time there was blighted by injury. He was due to return there for the forthcoming season as part of the deal that took Scott Parker to Stamford Bridge but, for whatever reasons, Carlton was adamant that he would not return to The Valley.

He now finds himself spending next season under tha guidance of David O'Leary. During his time as Leeds United manager, O'Leary developed a reputation for working well with youngsters, so this could be the best thing that has happened to Carlton (apart from when he signed his first professional deal with Chelsea!).

Villa Chief Executive Bruce Langham said "Cole is widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in the country. We have been negotiating with Chelsea for a number of weeks."

The move had the blessing of Jose Mourinho, who said "I think it is good for him. I have worked with him for a week and was impressed.

"I have no doubt that one day he will be a Chelsea player."

As with all our players being loaned out, Carlton will not be able to play against Chelsea next season.
