Carlo happier than Rafa - but not by much

Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez are like two peas in a pod there is little in their demeanour that suggests that they actually enjoy their jobs - maybe it's that they just dislike facing the media after a game.

You also feel asking them about their team's performance is like pulling out your own teeth - it's hard and not very rewarding.

Ancelotti, obviously the happier of the two but still he acts and speaks as if his side were defeated.

Having dispatched Liverpool 2-0 and opened up a two-point gap at the top of the Premier league, Ancelotti said:"It was an important win against a strong team.

"We maintained control and in the first half it was very even and the defences were on top.

"In the second half Liverpool put pressure on our midfield, but we deserved to win.

"I don't know if it was a better performance of late, but we did what we were prepared for.

"We wanted to avoid giving Gerrard any free passes and Lampard and Ballack did this job well."

When asked about the furore surrounding Chelsea's single defeat of the season, Ancelotti, after a spot of help from an interpretor said: It's the same the world over. But there is no pressure.

"We had a problem and we have now resolved it but it was not a big problem to start with.

"Didier Drogba supported Anelka well and worked hard for the team. To win against Liverpool and all the big teams we all needed to work together.

"To play Liverpool, it's not possible to play football so we needed the strength of Drogba, Ballack and Essien."

Ancelotti believes that the championship is in their hands: "It was a surprise to see Manchester United drop points, but we are in control and it's up to us to be concentrated and determined."

Benitez also pulled some teeth to open up about the defeat: "The performance was not bad," he opined.

"Chelsea are a good team. They did not have many chances. But when we made a mistake we got punished.

"We had to push forward when they scored and had chances."

Liverpool have now lost three games - one more than the whole of last season.

"Our target is to win the next game," he responded to the accusation that he has lost too many games to win the title.

"We must keep calm and keep working and focus on the next game.

"It's a long race," he concluded.
